Remember, this is free advertising and references provide additional information that programs will use when selecting an assistance provider!

Self-assessment tools are available online for training, coaching, and mentoring strategies. In addition, coaching documents that were shared at the October Connect Up! event are available on our website at http://www.afterschoolconnect.org/provider_resources/quality_framework

E-Workshop on Academic Vocabulary for PreK-Grade 2 English Language Learners

SchoolsMovingUp will be hosting a series of live, online professional development sessions with Pamela Spycher, Director of English Learners and the Language Arts (ELLA) at WestEd. Participants will learn and implement research-based methods of academic vocabulary instruction for English language learners in pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade. Participants will explore current research on vocabulary instruction for English language learners in the early years of schooling, have opportunities to share their ideas with colleagues, and receive support to practice implementing strategies in their own classrooms.

This series will be held February 3, 10, 17, 24 and March 3, 2010 from 3:00-4:30. Participants who register by January 1st will receive $75 off the registration cost.

California Addendum to National Report

The Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health has released a California-focused addendum to the recent national report, “The Positive Impact of Social and Emotional Learning for K-8 Students,” produced by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), and commissioned by the foundation.

The full report summarizes the impact of social and emotional learning (SEL) programs on students, based on a review of 317 studies that involved more than 320,000 children. Findings show that SEL programs yielded multiple benefits and were effective in both school and after school settings.

The California Addendum examines emotional health problems, as well as risk and protective factors, among students in California, with an emphasis on San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. It also profiles examples of local programs that effectively promote the healthy development of youth.
